Contentment is learned.

Paul is in prison as he writes to his friends. They have just given him a gift, most likely food, although it’s clear from the following passage he was content without the gift. Would you be content in prison without food?

10 I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. 11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:10-13

Do you experience joy and happiness only when you are winning? Do you experience joy and contentment only when the stock market is up and not down?

Paul has learned to be content and to adjust to every situation and circumstance. He learned to adjust to change. Paul’s contentment was not based upon a worldly measure. The world measures happiness and contentment by possessions, accomplishments, position and power.

Paul gained his contentment from the power and strength of knowing Christ was in him and he was in Christ Jesus. Circumstances changed and problems did not negate his joy and contentment. The lack of food or the abundance of possessions did not change Paul’s attitude. “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”

Where are you getting your power and strength?

Are you defining yourself by your possessions? Jesus speaks in Luke 12 to be on guard against all kinds of greed and covetousness, because life does not consist in the abundance of your possessions.

Paul found contentment in Christ Jesus and a peace which transcends all understanding in the midst of prison. God’s grace is enough for you today. HE loves you, accepts you, forgives you and wants you to totally trust HIM with everything today.
