Love, Death and Friendship

As you read the following passage answer the following questions. Jesus is giving you some of the secrets to the abundant life in this passage.

What is Jesus’ command? _________________

If you obey Jesus’ command what is the result? ___________________

What are the results of obeying Jesus? __________________________

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit-fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. This is my command: Love each other.” John 15:9-17

How do we remain in God’s love? We remain in God’s love by laying down our lives for our friends, which is dying to self and allowing God to work through us. You remain in God’s love by following HIS command to love others as HE has loved you and gave HIS life on the cross for you. Christ demonstrated his love for you in that while you were still a sinner, Christ died for you and all sinners.

The result of obeying Jesus’ command to love others is your entrance into the intimacy of FRIENDSHIP with Christ Jesus. You are no longer a servant but a FRIEND. As a friend the Kingdom of God will be made known to you. Your joy will be made complete even in suffering to death you will experience joy.

Another result of obeying Jesus’ command to love others is you will bear fruit that will last. Unless a seed falls to the ground and dies it remains a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Death to yourself and to your old nature will bring life and fruit that will last for eternity. You will not produce the fruit. The fruit will come through you because you are attached to the vine. It is only Christ Jesus living in you that will bear fruit. Your love, peace and gentleness will be evident to all because the Lord is your friend. You are no longer a servant but a friend. The relationship has moved from servant to friendship with Christ Jesus. The mysteries of heaven will be made known to you as a friend.

Here is the command: Love each other. Look for the results today as you follow this command.
