No Fish

Why do you not have any fish?

Why did Peter go fishing?

Jesus appears to the disciples following the crucifixion. Peter had denied Jesus three times. This is the third time which Jesus had appeared to Peter following Jesus’ death and resurrection.

1Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Tiberias. It happened this way: 2Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. 3“I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

4Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

5He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?” “No,” they answered.

6He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. John 21:1-6

Peter was fishing because he was ashamed of denying Jesus three times. Immediately a rooster crowed. 75Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly. Matthew 26:75 Peter wept bitterly for denying Jesus. Jesus had appeared to Peter two other times before going fishing yet Peter had not overcome his disgrace and shame. Peter chose to fish rather than seek Jesus.

Peter and the other disciples did not even recognize Jesus. When you are seeking anything other than Jesus you will not see HIM. When you are running away from Jesus you will not catch any fish. It was not until Peter and the other disciples obeyed Jesus that they were able to catch fish. Once they followed Jesus they had abundant fish.

God uses your failures, flaws, shame, regrets and disgrace as stepping stones to building HIS CHURCH, the body of Christ. God wants to reconcile you and the world to God through Jesus Christ. Peter is the rock on which Jesus the Church is being built. Your past shame and disgrace are the basis to build the Church. Walk today knowing you have an abundance of fish because of your adoption into the family of God. You are a child of God. Peter was forgiven for denying Jesus three times. Jesus has forgiven you.
