Resentful toward others

The people of Nineveh were enemies of God and Israel. God loves repentance more than sacrifice. The people of Nineveh were wicked and the wrath of God was moving upon them. However, God showed grace to the repentant nation. So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them. Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it. Jonah 4:6,10

Do you have a spirit like Jonah? Jonah did not want to share the God of Israel with the people living in Nineveh. He resented them because they were against God. They were enemies of God. They had committed terrible atrocities against the people of Israel. Jonah did not want the people of Nineveh to be redeemed and spared from their wickedness. He wanted them to die and suffer the consequences of their sinful nature.

God had other plans for Nineveh. God wanted to redeem a nation of rebellious people from their sin. God used Jonah, an unwilling vessel, to proclaim the Gospel message of repentance. God saw the people of Nineveh as lost, desperate, without hope, spiritually naïve, in need of mercy and worthy of saving. Jonah did not see the people of Nineveh through the eyes of God. He saw them through his own flesh and wanted them punished. He did not want to share HIS GOD of mercy, grace and redemption with his enemy. Jonah’s hatred was intense and he longed to see God’s mercy withheld from his enemies.

What is your view of people who disagree with you? Do you see them as God sees them: lost, desperate, without hope, spiritually naive, in need of mercy and worthy of saving? Are you carrying anger, resentment and hatred toward these people?

Allow God to search your heart and reveal areas of resentment, bitterness, hatred, envy, jealousy and unforgiveness. Are you unwilling to be a witness to those who are against you? Are you willing to share the mercy of God with your enemy? Are you withholding the Gospel of the Kingdom of God from those who you hate? Has someone treated you wrong and you want them to suffer the consequences of the wrath of God? Do you want the wrath of God or the grace of God for a group of people who are opposing you? What is in your heart? What is in your heart will come out of your mouth.

May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable to you Lord my rock and my salvation.
