The greatest robbery of all time is the robbery of truth. Banks can be broken into and money stolen. You can have your possessions taken. You can have your car broken into and valuables taken. Yet the greatest robbery is to be of such a corrupt mind that you are robbed of truth. We give such cause and concern over the temporal being stolen, yet the eternal is of far more value lasting forever.
In the book of Timothy we read there is constant friction among people of corrupt mind who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.
God is eternal. You are created with eternity in your heart. Yet the temptation of man is to fall in love with the temporal (money, financial gain and power). Attaining the temporal – bigger cars and houses – is thought to bring peace, contentment, joy and happiness. Often the temporal brings a desire for more and bigger.
Naked you came into the world and naked you will leave.
Are you being robbed of the truth, expecting that godliness will bring financial gain? You are being robbed of the truth. The truth is Godliness with contentment is great gain. Trials develop our faith, not financial gain. Trials break us of our pride and arrogance. Trials are times of tremendous spiritual growth. Trials draw us closer to God. Financial gain may lead us down the path of dependence on self rather than God.
Financial gain becomes an idol and trap for many which can lead to ruin. The desire to gain wealth has caused many to fall into ruin and destruction and even lose their faith.
If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.
But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 1 Timothy 6:3-9
Godliness with contentment is great gain. The enemy of God wants to rob you of eternal truth. Your adversary (the devil) came to steal, kill and destroy the truth. Seek the Truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to empower you today.
