Selfish love or giving love

How have you learned about love – from the world or the Word of God? Who mentored and taught you Agape Love? The world teaches a lie about love. To the world, love is selfish. It is a conditional love – “If I get what I want, I will love you. If I don’t get what I want, I will withdraw my love.” This is selfish love.Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. 1 John 4:7-12

What is agape love? Agape love is of and from God, whose very nature is love itself. The Apostle John affirms, “God is love.” God does not merely love; He is love itself. Everything God does flows from His love. But it is important to remember God’s love is not a sentimental love such as we often see portrayed. God loves because that is His nature and the expression of His being. He loves the unlovable and the unlovely (you!), not because you deserve to be loved, but because it is His nature to do so, and He must be true to His nature and character. God’s love is displayed most clearly at the Cross, where Christ died for the unworthy creatures who were “dead in trespasses and sins,” not because you did anything to deserve it, “but God commends His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.” The object of agape love never does anything to merit His love. We are the undeserving recipients upon whom He lavishes that love. His love was demonstrated when He sent His Son into the world to “seek and save that which was lost,” and to provide eternal life to those He sought and saved. He gave the ultimate sacrifice for those He loves.

If you love one another, God lives in you and his love is made complete in you. Your completeness can only be found in God because God is love. Your redeemed life is a reflection of God’s mercy and love.

Walk today in the confidence that you are complete through the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross. His love was made complete in you. You are a Child of God completely formed in HIS IMAGE. He made you for HIS PURPOSE – to love one another.
