The Best Defense Attorney
Here’s the situation: You are in jail, awaiting trial on charges of murder, lying, cheating, adultery and stealing. If you are convicted, you will be sentenced to death. You need the best defense attorney available to get you acquitted.
You get a referral to a great attorney who has a reputation for acquitting his clients 100% of the time. His acquittal rate is high because he carefully chooses his clients. His clients must be heartbroken and willing to change. You are told this attorney will argue your case before the Supreme Court. You can’t wait to meet with this great attorney. You tell the attorney you will do anything to get acquitted of the charges. The attorney asks you, “Did you commit the crimes?” You confess and tell the great attorney the whole truth and tell him, yes, you are guilty of all the charges. You again go before the great attorney on your knees pleading to be acquitted of your offenses. You say, “I am sorry, I am so sorry for my behavior. I want to change my ways. Will you please forgive me and get me acquitted?”
Jesus is the great attorney. Jesus agrees to plead your case before God in God’s courtroom. As you might expect, God finds you guilty of lying and being dishonest to God, guilty of murder with your tongue, guilty of cheating on God Almighty, guilty of adultery by having other lovers over God, and guilty of stealing by holding back gifts which are to be used for the expansion of the Kingdom of God. You are facing eternal death because of your offenses. However, in the final sentencing, Jesus Christ (the great attorney) pleads on your behalf to take your sentence for you because of your repentant heart! God accepts the plea and sets you free and acquits you of all your charges of sin against Holy God. You are pardoned by the blood of Jesus Christ (the great attorney).
1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense -Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.1 John 2:1-2
THEREFORE, SINCE we are justified (acquitted, declared righteous, and given a right standing with God) through faith, let us [grasp the fact that we] have [the peace of reconciliation to hold and to enjoy] peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One). Romans 5:1
Thank you dear Lord for being my advocate and mediator. Thank you for being my great defense attorney acquitting me of all my sin.
