Why do we believe we need Gideon to rule over us?

The Israelites came to Gideon and wanted Gideon and his family to rule over all of Israel. They wanted him to be the ruler and leader of Israel because Gideon, not the Lord, was perceived to have saved them from the hand of Midian.

They asked of Gideon, will you rule over us? How would you respond?

How would you respond if you, like Gideon, were asked to be the ruler of a nation? The Israelites had a great victory in which God through Gideon delivered them from a foe much larger and stronger.

The LORD said to Gideon, “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength has saved me.’ Now announce to the army, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.’ ” So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained. Judges 7:2-3

The purpose of shrinking the size of the army from 32,000 to 300 was to show that God is the one who brings victory. Victory is the Lord’s. Victory is not based upon the strength or size of an army. Yet the people wanted to give credit to Gideon. We adore idols and role models. We want to worship people more than God especially when there has been victory. We want to give man credit for something God accomplished through man. Man wants to worship the sun, moon, water, mountains, trees and animals versus the creator of ALL.

The Lord knew man would boast against HIM. The Lord knows the heart of wicked man. The Lord knew the Israelites would think Gideon was the one who saved them. This is why the Lord told Gideon to reduce the army from 32,000 to 300. Yet they wanted to make Gideon and his family, not God, ruler.

Satan’s big lie continues to be that man does not need God. Man can rule without God. Man is in control. The victory is man’s. Man can do it by himself. Man is educated and self-sufficient. Man using self-effort can achieve without God.

Walk today in the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ who gives you victory over sin, death and fear. Jesus Christ is Lord and King. He is the ruler of all mankind. God gave the Israelites victory. The victory is the Lord’s, not man’s.
