The following are wrong questions coming from a flawed way of thinking. What do I have to do to earn eternal life? Here is the same question asked a little differently: What must I do to get eternal life?When you receive a gift, is there anything you must do to get the gift?Eternal Life is a gift. This is hard to receive because our mindset is about “doing.” If we do “good” then we get eternal life. If we do “bad” we go to hell. The question and thinking is all about us and what we do.
Many mistakenly think we earn eternal life by our efforts in doing “good.” We earn the right to eternal life by what we do.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23
This can be a hard idea to accept – that salvation and eternal life is through Jesus Christ as a gift. Our flawed religious minds cause us to think we earn eternal life through our efforts and good works. Ephesians 2 addresses this type of thinking.
8 For it is by free grace (God’s unmerited favor) that you are saved (delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ’s salvation) through [your] faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [of your own doing, it came not through your own striving], but it is the gift of God;
9 Not because of works [not the fulfillment of the Law’s demands], lest any man should boast. [It is not the result of what anyone can possibly do, so no one can pride himself in it or take glory to himself.] Ephesians 2:8-9
For many people this is a big shift in thinking – to accept and receive salvation and eternal life as a Gift. It takes the focus off man by self-effort and puts it all on what Jesus Christ did on the cross for mankind.
Jesus redeemed mankind from all sin past, present and future. HE healed all disease. HE overcame sin and death. HE made you complete by the finished work on the cross. Unbelief holds many back from receiving all God has for them on the cross.
Jesus Christ renews your mind through the scriptures. HE reveals HIMSELF by continuing to remove the veil from your eyes. God wants to give all the Gifts HE has for HIS Children. You are the Righteousness of God in Jesus Christ and there is no condemnation in you because you are in Christ having received the Gift.
